CHAPTER EIGHT

FAMILY TRADITION

The song ended and the boy’s eyes watered. New song after new song played as the man and boy dined the only sounds coming from the music player. After the first few songs played, the man finished eating but the boy wasn’t done. He ate bowl after bowl, stuffing his empty belly after the days of hunger, finally satiated the boy sat back sighing in happiness patting his over full belly with satisfaction.

The music stopped and the man stood up clearing the table and tidying up. The boy sighed with tired eyes and resigned himself to being a good guest. He stood up and helped the man clean up in a familiar ritual. When the two were done cleaning up the man made some tea and the boy sat back down at the table and waited. The kettle whistled and the tea was made. The man joined the boy at the table and they enjoyed their after dinner tea. Finally, the man sighed smiling then spoke.

“There is nothing like a good cup of tea to settle the stomach and nerves eh boy?” The man asked.

The boy smiled and nodded, remembering how his Master would say the same thing every time they had tea.

“I believe it’s time to discuss things. I imagine you have as many questions as I do.” The man continued, “My name is Roshi, if you couldn’t tell, Yoshi was my brother.”

The boy nodded he had assumed they were related due to the likeness and mannerisms. He focused his attention on Roshi as he began speaking again.

“Come it is time to let you know who you are and why you are here.” Roshi said, rising and beckoning for the boy to follow.
